Your pre-interview routine | A&O Shearman careers

It’s normal to feel nervous before an interview. You’ve worked hard, put time and effort into your application, and you only want to do your best.

It’s great to be prepared for the interview itself, but there are many things you can do ahead of the event to keep calm and make sure things go smoothly.

Be rational and remind yourself that it’s a friendly conversation. Interviews can feel intimidating, but recruiters and partners only want to get to know you and help you succeed.
Test any links ahead of time and check that all your tech is working and ready to go. If you have any issues, ask for help.
If at home, set yourself up in a quiet room where you won’t be disturbed and can sit comfortably.
Make sure your internet connection is strong where you are set up.
Have a pen, paper and glass of water to hand.
Get a good night’s sleep the night before. If you’re nervous and struggling to wind down, try a guided mediation or taking deep breaths to calming music.
Make time to have a cup of tea or go for a walk before your interview to gather your thoughts and relax.
Even if your interview is via video call, dress smartly. This will help you feel more confident and prepared.
Try the superman pose. Studies have shown that standing with your hands on your hips and shoulders back for two minutes before a task is great for self-confidence.

Getting to the interview stage at any firm is a great achievement, so don’t forget to enjoy the experience.
