Working at A&O Shearman
Working at A&O Shearman Culture and benefits Training and development Candidate charter Ways of workingOur culture enables us to engage in inspiring and challenging work, give our best, and deliver outstanding results for our clients. It’s important that we manage our time and energy in way that enables us to sustain high performance and supports others to do the same.
Our ten ways of working are about doing what matters better, and helping each other to succeed. They are enablers that help us achieve excellence consistently. We have used best practices and collaborated with our people to create straightforward, practical guidelines that everyone in our firm can follow.

We make sure everyone understands the bigger picture, why their work matters and how it contributes to our shared success.

We invest time in planning to ensure everyone knows what needs to be done, by whom, and by when. We engage with our clients on the management of projects and timelines. We consider the use of work allocation or alternative internal resourcing and consider how best to manage necessary late-night or weekend work.

We favor clear and concise verbal and written communication. We are upfront about what’s needed, especially when delegating work. We respect each other’s time by starting and finishing meetings promptly, keeping calendars up to date, and being mindful of time zones, religious celebrations, and public holidays.

We spend time together in the office, strengthening relationships and community. Connection builds trust, inclusion and resilience, and facilitates collaboration, learning and development.

We use technology (including AI) effectively to be more efficient and manage projects better. We demonstrate being present by turning cameras on for internal and client virtual calls and by actively listening.

By checking in with colleagues, asking how they’re doing, and actively listening to what they tell us, we ensure everyone feels heard. Sharing our own concerns encourages others to do the same, and discussing capacity issues or the need for support is normalized.

We give and seek feedback to continuously improve our performance and our team’s performance. We learn from each other, seeking out diverse perspectives and challenging our own assumptions.

When we make mistakes (which we all do) we don’t apportion blame but seek to understand and learn from them.

We recognize different working styles and always treat each other with respect and professionalism. We regularly review our ways of working and are conscious of how our own working patterns, preferences, communication styles, and deadlines may affect others.

We recognize achievements, both big and small. We celebrate team wins – in a manner that is inclusive – and thank colleagues, especially when they have gone above and beyond and done a great job.
